Sitting in a hotel in Hue

I don't have any pictures to add to this since I'm on a public computer, but I figured I'd give a very quick and basic update on my trip to central Vietnam. To start with, the weather has been mostly awful. We left a brilliantly sunny Saigon on Thursday and landed in leaden-skied Da Nang, and we haven't seen the sun since. Yesterday, our last day in Hoi An, was miraculously dry, but Hue has been nasty so far. We just walked to the Citadel but there is an omnipresent mist that gets everything wet, so we decided to come back to the hotel and hope for better weather tomorrow.

The bus ride from Hoi An this morning, though, made today a good day anyway. Some of the views along the way were simply stunning. At one point we stopped for a bathroom break at a random restaurant. Anthony and I wandered out back and stumbled upon a small fishing village that overlooks a scene that made me think we were in Switzerland: a serene lake surrounded on three sides by towering mountains, wrapped in a blanket of clouds and mist. As we drove further on rice paddies stretched for miles on both sides of the road. The ride really gave us a sense of why this country is so amazing. As for Hoi An itself, sometimes it's amazing, sometimes it's terrible. The food was fantastic and the Old Town was picturesque, but the oblivious tourists, relentless store owners, and honking motobikes made for a very frustrating experience at times. Still, I'm glad we went, and our hotel was great.

Da Nang was very quiet, and the South China Sea was way too rough and cold to go for a swim, but we did rent motorbikes and go for an incredible drive on the mountainous Son Tra peninsula, which we could see from our hotel room, Thursday afternoon. It was nice to be away from the tourist crush for a little while. Despite the weather this has still been a great trip, and I'll obviously have a lot more to talk about and show when we get back to Saigon on Wednesday. Until then, keep on keepin' on.
