I'm back in Saigon after my Tet vacation to Malaysia. There was a potentially major hiccup in my plans when I fully dislocated my right thumb while playing dodgeball two nights before I was supposed to leave. I'll spare you the freakish picture of what my hand looked like from the outside, but here is an x-ray:
Thumb on the left, way out of place.
The finger really couldn't have been more dislocated without breaking. This injury required a late-night trip to the nearest Western-grade clinic, where I had to wait for both the x-ray technician and orthopaedic specialist to be called in. A couple of my friends helped me out big time, as it would have been impossible for me to get there given how much pain I was in. Not to mention I was on the verge of passing out after seeing my mangled hand. The doctor popped the thumb back into its socket, but was worried about the stability because all of the ligaments in the finger were torn. So, the following day (less than 24 hours before my flight to Kuala Lumpur), I had to go back to get a pin put in:
This left the thumb almost completely immobilized. Fortunately I was cleared to travel, but I would be learning just how much is possible without the use of your right thumb. I'll be posting about my travels in KL, Melaka, and Langkawi over the next few days, but for now here is one picture from each location to give you a preview. This was my first trip since I bought my new DSLR, so expect some good shots.
